Civil Service employees of the Board of Education in the competitive or labor class automatically gain membership on the date of their appointment. Other employment classes of the Board of Education such as provisional, non-competitive and exempt class employees, and regular and per diem substitute teachers, without respect to full time or part time status, can voluntarily become members of BERS on the date a completed enrollment form is received at BERS.

Membership in BERS is not open to employees also eligible to participate in the Teachers’ Retirement System of the City of New York (TRS).
