The Board of Education Retirement System of the City of New York (BERS), is established primarily to provide retirement benefits to Board of Education employees who are not eligible to participate in the Teachers Retirement System of the City of New York (TRS). Since 1921, the systems goal is to provide its members with the security of knowing that they will have adequate retirement benefits in the form of both a pension and a Tax Deferred Annuity Program (if applicable), when they retire from the Board of Education. Retirement benefits are accrued during employment from contributions from your employer and your own salary. Employer contributions, plus investment income from BERS assets, pay for the bulk of the cost of providing BERS retirement benefits. The Board of Education Retirement System strives to provide you with the tools necessary to enhance your retirement benefits. We are here to serve our membership. [retirement programs menu]
